Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between stainless steel and aluminum?

Stainless steel is a type of steel that contains at least 10.5% chromium, which makes it more resistant to corrosion and staining. Aluminum, on the other hand, is a lightweight and versatile metal that is also resistant to corrosion.

Guidelines when Designing for Metal Additive Manufacturing PBF/DMLS:

Part Size:

Additive Metal USA can accommodate 3D printing up to 500 x 280 x 325 mm

+/- 0.005” for the first inch is typical, plus +/- 0.002” for every inch thereafter. Tolerance expectations can vary across different materials (e.g. stainless steel versus aluminum).
Internal stresses during build, support strategy, and other geometry considerations may cause deviation in tolerances and flatness.
Modeled threads or precision features may have limited functionality as printed. Tapping or the addition of threaded inserts is recommended for best function.
Expected surface roughness is 150-400 µin RA, depending on build orientation and material used for the build.
General tolerances apply before secondary finishing or post-processing unless otherwise specified.

Do you offer metal finishing services?

Yes, we offer a range of metal post processing options and finishing services including machining, Ra callouts, and optional chromate conversion and anodizing of final parts. These services can be customized to meet your specific needs and requirements. Some services will increase costs.

Finishing

Finished surfaces will be free of defects, burrs, scrapes, or other damage. Parts will be lightly media blasted and clean at delivery.

Foreign Object Debris (FOD)

Surfaces will be free of cutting fluid, metal chips, foreign objects, and other debris.

Threads

Threads will be fully formed and cut to specified size and class indicated in provided drawings.
Threads will be free of defects, notable damage, and contamination.

What is your on manufacturing services policy?

Please let us know what requirements are critical to you before we quote. If no drawings or specific requirements were provided, we will fabricate the parts with our best effort without any specific guarantees. If drawings or specific requirements are provided after quoting, a new quote may be generated to account for the added scope.
